Cultural Skills Medals

There are many areas in which to earn Cultural Skills Medals: Cooking, Norwegian and Norwegian-American authors, collecting Norwegian and North American stamps, rosemaling, genealogy, knitting, Norwegian language and culture, Hardanger embroidery, figure carving, weaving, ornamental woodcarving, chip carving, music and musicians of Norway, and Norwegian folk dancing. You can get detailed information about what is involved by visiting the Sons of Norway website. If you'd like to form a group and work on earning a Cultural Skills Medal in any of the areas, contact Cultural Director Luana Marie Jøsvold and she will coordinate the formation of groups.

"Hosts" System for Meetings

John Gregg, Social Director, will be the first Host (Vert in Norwegian) and will direct the set-up of refreshments at 6:30. The group responsible for assisting John consists of members whose last names begin with a designated range of the alphabet. Typically, this group is responsible for bringing "goodies" and for the 6:30 pm set-up of tables and chairs, covering the tables, preparing the coffee, heating the tea water, and seeing there is a table centerpiece, cream and other beverages; also helping after the meeting by returning chairs and tables to storage and emptying the coffee makers and returning the used items to storage. ALL in this group should call John at 617-484-5748 (8-9 PM preferred) with message about attendance and refreshment options. Note: any other members who wish to bring goodies should also let John know for planning’s sake. Please take your turn gladly, remembering that, for every meeting that you serve, there will be two or three at which you will BE served! Tusen takke!

New Lodge Songbooks

We continue to receive donations in honor of, or in memory of, family members, lodge members, friends, etc. The lyrics-only version of the songbook costs $5.00 and the version with both music and lyrics costs $20. So far, most of the donations have been for the version with both music and lyrics, and we hope that most people will choose that option. As one member put it, "It's always easier to sing a song, particularly a new one, if you know whether the notes are going up or down." Your donation to purchase a new songbook for the lodge is part of a greater effort, because the new songbook is a fund-raiser for the Sons of Norway Foundation Humanitarian Aid Fund. If you wish to purchase one of the new songbooks for the lodge, send your check, made payable to Norumbega Lodge #3-506" to Luana Marie Jøsvold. Let us know if the donation is in honor of, or in memory of, someone so that we can make a label to put in the songbook. Forms will also be available at the March meeting.

Become A Tidende Booster!

A Tidende booster helps defray the cost of printing and mailing the Norumbega Tidende. To be a Tidende Booster the cost is $10.00 annually which will help with the printing and postage in mailing the newsletter to our entire Norumbega Family. It is a large expense item and your help will make a difference. You can send a check made out to Norumbega Lodge # 3-506 for $10.00 or more and we will add your name to the booster list, which is periodically printed in the newsletter. Checks should be sent to Peter Vatne, Treasurer. Thanks for your help.

Small Group Workshops

Sessions taking place in a single morning or afternoon, on a variety of subjects in Scandinavian crafts and literature which would be difficult to present as programs for regular Lodge meetings. Workshops continue to be added. See the Small Group Workshops page for details.

"In Honor Of..." Fundraiser for Scholarship Fund

Individual members can honor, recognize, memorialize, give thanks for, or express joy in... family and friends or family events, by submitting a note to such effect to be published in the Norumbega Tidende, and including a check of any amount from $5.00 on up made out to Norumbega Lodge 506. The amount of the check will not be released for public information. This should be sent to Jean Husher at the address shown in the membership list. --- A typical statement for publication in the Norumbega Tidende might be: "In Joy and Thanksgiving by Mary and John Doe for the birth of grandchild Knut, on March 14, 2002, in Albany, NY. The parents are son Tom and his wife Jane." Or perhaps: "In loving memory of my husband Dick Jones, who died February 10th, by his wife Helen."

Lending Library

We have recently acquired the following books:

  • Guide for Leadership by Sons of Norway. The duties of each office are described in detail.
  • Voices From the Waterfront: Portrait of the New Bedford Fishing Industry by Kirsten Bendiksen and Laurel Orleans. Interesting stories about the New Bedford Fishing Industry and, in particular, stories about Norwegian immigrants.
  • In Cod We Trust by Eric Dregni. Great book on Norwegian culture.

To view the entire list, just click the desired category below. (Viewing these lists requires the Adobe Acrobat viewer; get a free copy if you need it.)
