Small Group Potluck Suppers for Norumbega Members:“Get to Know a Member”
In the fall, we plan to arrange small group potluck suppers for Norumbega members. Our membership is spread out over a very wide geographic area; our members don’t necessarily interact on a regular basis; and many people don’t make it to the cultural meetings for various reasons—distance, weather, no longer driving at night, etc.
Group potluck suppers located in different towns will provide an opportunity for members to get to know one another better than simply sharing a few remarks over coffee at a monthly meeting, will allow us a better opportunity to make new members feel welcome, and could be a recruiting tool to find new members. The suppers would be stress-free gatherings where people can connect with other lodge members and potential lodge members and even discuss what Sons of Norway is, what the lodge is, and how best to enjoy and grow the lodge.
We’ll be asking members to sign up to be either hosts or participants. Hosts will be responsible for providing their home and a main course. Participants will be assigned to a host and will bring a dish or drink and attend a dinner. Think about whether you’d be willing to host one of the dinners and let either Steve Oyangen or Luana Jøsvold know how many guests you have room for at your dining room table. When we know how many hosts we have, we’ll match you up with guests in your area. This should be fun!
Prepare to Apply for Norumbega Lodge Scholarships for Next Academic Year!
Norumbega Lodge No. 3-506 has an annual scholarship program which provides financial support for post-secondary education. Children and grandchildren of current Lodge members are invited to apply in their final year of high school, or during their undergraduate years. Scholarships are not applicable to graduate or advanced degree work.
To apply, an interested student must submit a completed application form; an official transcript from their current or most recent institution of study; at least two (2) recommendations from non-relatives; and an essay describing how he/she plans to use future education and the scholarship award to achieve career goals. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2018. Previous PDF versions of the scholarship form, application instructions, and a list of FAQ about the Scholarships are available here on this website as examples.
Scholarships are awarded in $500 increments, with a maximum of two (2) increments, or $1,000, to any single scholarship recipient. The scholarships are typically awarded at the June Lodge meeting.

Cultural Skills Medals
There are many areas in which to earn Cultural Skills Medals: Cooking, Norwegian and Norwegian-American authors, collecting Norwegian and North American stamps, rosemaling, genealogy, knitting, Norwegian language and culture, Hardanger embroidery, figure carving, weaving, ornamental woodcarving, chip carving, music and musicians of Norway, and Norwegian folk dancing. You can get detailed information about what is involved by visiting the Sons of Norway website. If you'd like to form a group and work on earning a Cultural Skills Medal in any of the areas, contact the Cultural Committee, which coordinates the formation of groups.
If you like to exercise, you can participate in the Third District Walking Contest.
Record your steps with a Fitbit, smartphone, or pedometer. Each month during 2017, report them to Karen Lein. These miles can also be used to earn a Walking Medal. There are also medals in: Biking,
Skiing, Swimming, and Other Sports. See Karen Lein for these too.
New Lodge Songbooks
We continue to receive donations in honor of, or in memory of, family members, lodge members, friends, etc. The lyrics-only version of the songbook costs $5.00 and the version with both music and lyrics costs $20. So far, most of the donations have been for the version with both music and lyrics, and we hope that most people will choose that option. As one member put it, "It's always easier to sing a song, particularly a new one, if you know whether the notes are going up or down." Your donation to purchase a new songbook for the lodge is part of a greater effort, because the new songbook is a fund-raiser for the Sons of Norway Foundation Humanitarian Aid Fund. If you wish to purchase one of the new songbooks for the lodge, send your check, made payable to Norumbega Lodge #3-506" to Luana Marie Jøsvold. Let us know if the donation is in honor of, or in memory of, someone so that we can make a label to put in the songbook.
Become A Tidende Booster!
A Tidende booster helps defray the cost of printing and mailing the Norumbega Tidende. To be a Tidende Booster the cost is $10.00 annually which will help with the printing and postage in mailing the newsletter to our entire Norumbega Family. It is a large expense item and your help will make a difference. You can send a check made out to Norumbega Lodge # 3-506 for $10.00 or more and we will add your name to the booster list, which is periodically printed in the newsletter. Checks should be sent to our Treasurer. Thanks for your help.
Please remember to contact a member of the Sunshine Committee about those who are hospitalized, convalescing, or grieving. See "Sunshine Committee" in officers' list below. They await your calls.
"In Honor Of..." Fundraiser for Scholarship Fund
Individual members can honor, recognize, memorialize, give thanks for, or express joy in... family and friends or family events, by submitting a note to such effect to be published in the Norumbega Tidende, and including a check of any amount from $5.00 on up made out to Norumbega Lodge 506. The amount of the check will not be released for public information. This should be sent to Jean Husher at the address shown in the membership list. --- A typical statement for publication in the Norumbega Tidende might be: "In Joy and Thanksgiving by Mary and John Doe for the birth of grandchild Knut, on March 14, 2002, in Albany, NY. The parents are son Tom and his wife Jane." Or perhaps: "In loving memory of my husband Dick Jones, who died February 10th, by his wife Helen."
We continually acquire new books, DVDs, etc., which are available for members to borrow.
